Get Free Middle East Updates! NEWLarsen & ToubroLarsen & Toubro India’s biggest construction and engineering company, is planning to bid for the Muscat airport development. Larsen & ToubroLarsen & Toubro is pre-qualified for the multimillion project, which will have several packages, sources familiar with the development said. Each package will be tendered separately. Tenders for major packages will be floated before the year-end, it was reliably learnt. The government, which has already pre-qualified several international and local companies, will soon float tenders separately for different packages. The features of the development include a new terminal building, a big runway, air bridges, a new cargo terminal and parking facility for 6,000 vehicles. “Work on land filling is going on now,” an official noted.
Sources said that there was a change in the design of the Muscat airport, following adverse whether conditions in last June. The government this year allocated RO 111 million for consultancy studies, design and supervision of airport expansion. The Muscat and Salalah airport expansion, which is estimated to cost around $3 billion, will substantially enhance the passenger handling capacity. The new terminal building at Muscat airport will have a net floor area of 240,000 sqm.
The building is relatively large for an airport with that capacity because the intention is to provide a high standard of comfort in the terminal. In addition, Muscat is going to be a big transit airport, and extra space is needed to guide the many transit passengers through the terminal with ease. The passenger handling capacity of Muscat airport will touch 12 million per year in the first phase (from merely 2.5 million) and 24 million in the second phase.
Further expansion planned in the third phase will ultimately boost the airport’s capacity to 48 million passengers by 2050. Similarly, the development of Salalah Airport envisages an expansion of capacity to 1 million passengers by 2011. Larsen & ToubroLarsen & Toubro, which is well-positioned in building modern airports, has already built two Greenfield airports Bangalore and Hyderabad in India.
